Eugene Mirman - "En Garde, Society!"
Why people are going nuts (and they are) over the recorded equivalent of someone who’s had one Manhattan too many and thinks that open mic comedy night can’t be that hard is a mystery to me, but then so is 90% of what passes for “comedy” lately. I found it excruciatingly unfunny, to the point of embarrassment for Mirman. I smirked a couple of times, but I couldn’t get more than a third of the way through the disc without wanting to open a vein. There’s a DVD that comes with the CD; I made it through eight whole minutes before snapping it off. Maybe there’s some gold waiting at the end of the set. I’ll never know. Caveat emptor. I am slightly more positive -- the good stuff is quite good -- but the whole thing is extremely inconsistent and made me wonder why he thought he had enough material for a CD.
