Don't you know that it hurts me soIt's 25 days and counting until TEN63, the greatest cafe that ever existed, closes. NYC, being the huge organic structure that it is, has a lot of turnover and attrition. There aren't many places I've mourned the passing of, but TEN63 holds a place in my heart, not only because of its wondrous coffee and foodstuffs. It's also the first place I've been to, in my 8 years in the city, where I really felt content. Since I moved to LIC a year and a half ago--expecting that coming to Queens would surely signal the end of my social life--I've gone to TEN63 almost every day to get coffee and hang out, read the paper, write, and procrastinate instead of writing. It's been the fulcrum of the community. On weekends, N and I go there for brunch, and it's like, well shit, it's like we walk in knowing that we'll see people we know and like and it's a place of comfort. I've made friends there. I don't know what I'll do when it's gone. TEN63 is closing because someone bought the building. The new landlords are putting in highfalutin condos. My friend A (the manager) and I made t-shirts in protest. Hers says "Luxury Is Condo." Mine was going to say "WHERE ARE YOU GONNA GET YOUR LATTES NOW BOURGEOIS MOTHERFUCKERS" but there weren't enough A's. Lee Ann and I were having an elegiac conversation yesterday, TEN63 coffee in hand, flauting DA RULEZ of the MTA, wondering: What will we do when TEN63 closes? Not because there will be no coffee--there are three other (albeit inferior) cafes in the the neighborhood--but because there will be no *there* there. Who will we chat with in the morning? Where will be our meeting spot? How will we ameliorate our morning doldrums? Lee Ann suggested we pick a meeting spot where people can come by and we can talk about the things we'd ordinarily talk about at the cafe. But what if it's raining, Lee Ann? WHAT IF IT'S RAINING? Thanks for the link Dana!
I would like you to know that I make a very good decaf soy latte.
We can hang a sign on my door, I'll put on a cute headscarf and pretend to be thin and gorgeous (yet quirky, sweet and smart) to serve it to you. Then you can walk to the train with someone else who popped in and talk about how sad it will be when my house closes because I can't afford my rent.
heh heh
;)
Lee Ann
holy crap. uh. I forget what i was going to say, but hey, thanks for hanging out when I came to your crappy little suburb last. Look into making that town, like, real. Anyhoo, cheers, I suppose.
Eventually I'm going to convince my girlfriend to move to nyc, but that's only after she gets a high paying job there, so figure either on never, or uh, let's say, 2007 (to be realistic).
If we come by, we'll be sure to invite you to the housewarming. Cheese.
