Everybody has their own opinionYeah, this "my music is being perverted by evil consumerism" trope is, well, getting trope-ish, but goddamn: what sort of idiot advertises his beer using a song about heroin addiction? Coors Light does, that's who. Posted by Dana at 10:49 PM

I think it's obvious at this point that marketing companies don't pay any attention to the lyrics of the songs that they use in their commercials anymore. Which is really a shame, since so many songs contain what would otherwise be great taglines for the products they wind up promoting. Picture (for a magazine ad perhaps) a shot of a man standing in front of a urinal, a can of Coors perched jauntily on it, with this tagline: Coors; jumping out of my flesh. Or: Coors; Holding it back hurts so bad.
This is something that could be applied to other seemingly incongruous music and product combinations. Like those annoying Carnival cruise ads. "Carnival Cruises: Your skin starts itching when you buy the gimmick." Or, "Carnival Cruises: Beat my brains with liquor and drugs."
Posted by: rasputin at April 26, 2005 04:00 AMnow, what does this beer stuff have to do with "one-armed maimed children" who go recklessly "running down the mountain"? beer, it's good!*
*except for Coors.
Posted by: reeves at April 26, 2005 09:32 AMTo be honest, I never really listened to the lyrics back in the day, and even now, after reading them, the heroin-ness doesn't exactly jump out at me. Pin eyes, ok. But where's the constipation verse?
If Coors is only going to be using 10 or so secs of that patented Perry screech, it will be annoying but not too weird.
Posted by: Wisco at April 26, 2005 12:43 PMYou know, Carnival Cruises used "Lust For Life," also about heroin addiciton. And Mercedes-Benz used "Lord Won't You Buy Me A Mercedes-Benz," a song about NOT buying a Mercedes-Benz.
My main problem is whether Perry knew that the Coors company was (and for all I know, post-Joseph Coors, still is to a lesser extent) arch-arch-conservative.
I blame Dave Navarro. Fame chaser.
