Despair and Ice Cream

I'm sure I'm not the only one who found The New York Times Magazine cover story depressing, or disturbing, or a combination thereof. What was it, exactly, that put me into a debilitating funk after reading it? The fear that this could describe me (nah, couldn't possibly)? Or the bathos of the people profiled? Or maybe the sneaking suspicion that I *am* like that and no one will tell me? Jesus.

What if properly filling out an interlibrary request form is as good as it gets?

There was something else I wanted to write about this weekend but I've forgotten. (No joke. The green ones make you smaller.)

Oh, and here's another song for you (well, actually, it's for N, who requested it personally): I Got 5 On It, by Luniz.

Anyone else got any requests?

I know, I know. It's all Warren G-ish. But it's a good song. Maybe even *hella* good. Give it a chance. It'll grow on you.

How about a copy of the Sparks boxed set?

...oh, wait, I was already promised that.

winky and i had a long talk about that NY Times cover story. we both called bullshit on it. this is a classic example of a journalist taking a very obvious and mundane reality – office workers expressing their dissatisfaction with the choices they've made, by not quite being able to apply their undivided attention and getting otherwise easily distracted at an uninspiring job – and diagnosing it as a prescript-able disorder. A.D.D. my A.S.S. attending 2-hour long meetings about the brand equity of Friskies cat food makes it hard to sit still and take it.

I totally agree with Winky and Todd. For way, way too long quacks in the pharmaceutical companies' pockets have been far too willing to diagnose kids with ADHD/ADD at the drop of a hat. No different with adults. It's just a broadening of the market.

Oh, and if anyone knows where I can download "Little Ethnic Song" by J. Mascis from the 1991 compilation Guitarrorists I'd appreciate that informational tidbit as well. Thanks.

possibly worth noting that neither of us actually read any more than the headline on the cover before we condemned it as emblematic of all that is wrong with our nation today. i'll stand by that, though. why confuse the issue by actually reading it? now get back to work.

I think it goes without saying that neither of us bothered to read the whole piece, since we both suffer terribly from Adult A.D.D.

Why just the other day I was sitting in a meeting, listening to someone talk about the brand equity of Honey Nut Apple Cheerios, and I found myself becoming very bored and distracted. Classic ADD.
