These should not be forgotten yearsAs tenuous a connection as this perhaps is, should we completely discount it? It's creepy, and not explained away enough for my taste: At one point during the bus ride, Berg said, the man sitting next to his son asked if he could use Nick's laptop computer...."It turned out this guy was a terrorist and that he, you know, used my son's e-mail, amongst many other people's e-mail who he did the same thing to," Berg said....Government sources said Berg gave the man his password, which was later used by Moussaoui, the sources said. Now, why would he have given his password to a complete stranger on the bus? Particularly given that in all likelihood he didn't have a wi-fi connection on his laptop, it being 2001 and in rural Oklahoma and all. It doesn't make sense. Unless his password was something like "1234" or "password" or "HIj4ck3r." (Anyhow, right now Nick Berg is nothing other than a tragic victim of our War On Terror. I just find the connection interesting.) Posted by Dana at 10:08 AM

Anyhow, right now Nick Berg is nothing other than a tragic victim of our War On Terror.
Let's be fair. He was also a victim of Al Qaeda'a war on the rest of the world. I'm not saying that the US government doesen't have to shoulder some blame here, but it's not like Berg's killers or the Madrid Bombers for that matter had no choice in the matter. Everyone seems to thinks it's the West's fault for making them mad. True, it's not a good idea to rattle these people's cages, but it's not like they have no responsiblity for how they respond.
Posted by: jonmc at May 14, 2004 10:56 AMAs far as I'm concerned, Nick Berg is dead because our government fucked up. He was killed after they released him from the custody they are denying they kept him in.
But I'm glad that you chose to overlook the entire point of my post to argue semantics. Good going.

-one thing is sure to me, this is going to be a conflict of icons, or single images that will be reproduced over and over. the increasing incoming media feed in our households of horrid images is the result of this war of terror from both sides of the evil spectrum. I remember the CNN feed of 13 years ago, a green screen with lots of dots of light, like an arcade game. This was war in the new century. Grab a beer and turn on the TV. Now the show is turning ugly, an american son beheaded, 1789 terreur style. For one thing the Administration was right about "Shock and Awe", this show will be unseen before.
I dont know if this fits the topic, but I just want to post it.
I think the real point is that neither Al Queda nor Nick Berg would be/have been in Iraq and none of this disgusting shit would be happening if the US had chosen to make a real attempt to defeat terrorism in places like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia rather than diverting enormous funds and resources to this debacle in Iraq in their effort to steal Iraqi oil and line the pockets war profiteers like Halliburton.
Posted by: Nick at May 14, 2004 01:00 PMjonmc, it's not a good idea to rattle dana's cage these days; she's in full-on i'll-kill-you mode. do you post a lot of stuff on CL rants & raves that involve ALL CAPITALS? by chance?
well said Nick.
Posted by: reeves at May 14, 2004 01:04 PMThis article might provide some insight on why he would have given his password up: More than 70% of people would reveal their computer password in exchange for a bar of chocolate.
